Tepid European and global response to the US’s violations of international law endangers global peace and security
The attached article by Eldar Mamedov in the Ambassador Partnership deals with a very weak, indeed tepid response to President Trump’s violation of Venezuelan sovereignty and the illegal kidnapping of the Venezuelan president and his wife in the middle of the night and transferring them to the United States, awaiting trial. This blatantly aggressive and illegal action has undermined international law and the sovereignty of a member of the United Nations for overtly financial gain and stealing Venezuelan oil.
The world is in a very perilous situation, made much worse by the US’s colonial invasion of a sovereign country, and by the weak response of other countries to those actions. Since the Second World War, international peace and security have been based, at least theoretically, on the United Nations Charter, which the United States primarily championed. The Charter forbids the use of force in settling international disputes, requires the application of international law equally to all states and the pursuit of peace by peaceful means.
During the past few years, even the pretence of adhering to international law has been brazenly violated by the Israeli genocide in Gaza and its attacks on a few of its neighbours, by the US’s aggressive attacks on Iran in the middle of negotiations, and on several other countries, culminating on attacks on a large number of boats in the high seas, killing more than 100 sailors and finally the invasion of Venezuela, seizing its oil, seizing some Chinese and Russian tankers, and openly threatening to seize Greenland. Under these circumstances, the West can hardly claim any moral authority when it correctly criticises Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.
These aggressive and illegal actions have totally undermined all the gains that mankind has made since the Second World War and have returned us to the philosophy of might makes right practised by the Nazis. What is worse is that European countries, which prided themselves on being the home of democracy and supporters of international law, have remained largely silent and even complicit in those crimes. The United States has mainly led the world in the pursuit of peace and security since World War II. As the still greatest military and economic power in the world, it can either return to championing international law or endanger the world by following the law of the jungle.
At a time when conflict between nuclear-armed states has become a reality and international crises are intensifying, the continuation of the current trends endangers humanity as a whole, and that includes Europe and America as well. It is more urgent than ever before for peace-loving nations to condemn the violations of international law and return to sanity and peaceful coexistence:
“While the EU’s elites seem to be going out of their way not to anger Trump, there is also a growing rejection of this form of vassalage, on both political right and left… This is how vassalage leads not only to Europe’s increasing irrelevance on the global stage, but now directly endangers NATO and EU’s own internal cohesion.”
