The horrific killing of innocent people at Bondi Beach must be condemned unreservedly, for there is no justification for violence, especially in democratic countries like Australia, New Zealand and most of Europe, where people can protest peacefully against the horrendous genocide in Gaza.
Terrorism has no religion, as can be witnessed by the acts of two ISIS-affiliated fanatics and the heroic bravery of another Muslim who jumped on one of the gunmen and took his weapon away, at great risk to himself. He was shot and has undergone one operation, and apparently has to have more operations. His act of heroism saved many lives. True to form, even before knowing who had been responsible for that horrendous terrorist act, the opportunistic war criminal Netanyahu immediately blamed Iran for it.
There is a poem by the famous Persian poet Nasir Khosrow (1004-1088), which addresses the nature of violence:
چون تیغ به دست آری مردم نتوان کشت
نزدیک خداوند بدی نیست فرامشت
این تیغ نه از بهر ستمگاران کردند
انگور نه از بهر نبید است به چرخشت
عیسی به رهی دید یکی کشته فتاده
حیران شد و بگرفت به دندان سر انگشت
گفتا که «کرا کشتی تا کشته شدی زار؟
تا باز که او را بکشد آنکه تو را کشت!»
انگشت مکن رنجه به در کوفتن کس
تا کس نکند رنجه به در کوفتنت مشت
Because you have a sword in your hand, it does not give you the right to kill people.
God will never forget your evil act…
Jesus saw a man lying dead on the road.
He was bewildered and saddened.
He said, “Whom did you kill to be killed so miserably?
And who will kill the one who killed you?”
Don’t hurt your finger by harming someone,
So that he does not hurt his fist, attacking you.
He argues, in the words of Jesus, that violence breeds violence and hatred will generate hatred. This vicious cycle of violence has to be broken before an eye for an eye will make everybody blind, as Gandhi said. We need less revenge killing and more justice and the rule of law.
