Make a deal, not war, by Farhang Jahanpour

No matter what excuse the Trump regime puts forward for its likely attempts at regime change in Venezuela, the fact remains that the real reasons are greed and dominance. The United States has one of the largest state debts of any country, currently exceeding $38 trillion, which is significantly higher than its GDP of $30.6 trillion in 2025. Far from reducing the amount of national debt, Trump’s policies of tariffs are likely to increase it.

Of course, a promised trillion-dollar investment by Saudi Arabia, along with smaller amounts from Qatar and the UAE, will help, but it cannot cover the growing debt scale. So, Trump and some members of his MAGA gang have their eyes on Venezuelan oil deposits, the biggest in the world, and the Iranian gas and oil resources, combined, the biggest in the world. Iran has the second-largest gas and the third-largest oil deposits in the world. If Trump can control those resources, they can provide a big chunk of the US debt.

However, what they do not seem to realise, and they will never learn from history, is that aggression will not be cost-free. By Trump’s own admission, the United States spent seven or eight trillion dollars on its aggressive wars in the Middle East and only left impoverished, failed states behind. By far, the easiest and most humane option is to reach an agreement with those countries to allow US companies to help develop those resources.

According to Iranian negotiators, Iran was on the verge of such an agreement when Israel carried out its criminal attacks against Iran. President Maduro has also said that he is ready to get US companies involved in Venezuelan oil. The current policies of amassing a formidable armada and tens of thousands of US forces near Venezuela and continued threats to Iran will only create a new catastrophe, which will severely damage the global economy and create many more enemies for the United States.

‘This would be a war waged not for “freedom” but for punitive enjoyment—a revanchist spectacle meant to renew MAGA’s sense of grievance and entitlement. The human costs would fall overwhelmingly on Venezuelans.’
