PERSPECTIO – where insight, scrutiny and knowledge coalesce.
I’ll be exploring some of the most important issues of our time with the most perceptive and relevant people.
In my first interview I unpack the Iran-USA ceasefire with Professor Farhang Jahanpour – he’s a former Dean of the Faculty of Languages at the University of Isfahan in Iran, and he also taught and lectured at the Universities of Oxford (where I had the privilege of studying Persian literature with him), Cambridge and Harvard. He was also a Middle East editor at BBC Monitoring, and was an interpreter for the UK during Iran’s nuclear talks.
Professor Jahanpour tells me that although Iran is asking for a lot in the ceasefire, they have a lot of leverage to negotiate. He believes Israel and the US have failed in their aims to bring about regime change in Iran, and have strengthened its governing system. He tells me this moment presents an opportunity to reform the GCC as the Persian Gulf Cooperation Countries, in order to work together to form a of powerful political, economical, and military bloc. As someone who observed the Iran nuclear negotiations, Professor Jahanpour says Iran made many concessions under the JCPOA deal in 2015, allowed regular and transparent inspections of its nuclear programme, which amounted to 50% of all international inspections, and that weopanising uranium has never been an aim for the Islamic Republic, nor was it for the Shah under whom Iran’s nuclear programme began.
